special effects

Special effects

Special effects are traditionally divided into the categories of optical effects and mechanical effects.

Optical effects( photographic effects)are techniques in which images or film frames are created photographically. For example, multiple exposure . An optical effect might be used to place actors or sets against a different background.

mechanical effects are usually accomplished during the live-action shooting. This includes the use of mechanized props, scenery, scale models, pyrotechnics and Atmospheric Effects. For exaple, a car appear to drive by itself.

Virtual communities

"when people carry on public discussions long enough, with sufficient human feeling, to form webs of personal relationships...”( H.Rheingold,1993,The Virtual Community)Virtual communities, or online communities, are used for a variety of social and professional groups interacting via the Internet. Virtual communities become a supplemental form of communication between people who know each other primarily in real life. Though discussing, people from anywhere can discuss some society problems together.

web 2.0 = Read-Write Web

The Features described create a version of the internet where average people can contribute --- The Read-Write web. It means that everyone can read the web and write some critiques. People can share their mind. As a social media, web makes a very important position. A Web 2.0 site allows its users to interact with other users or to change website content, in contrast to non-interactive websites where users are limited to the passive viewing of information that is provided to them.

week 3

In week 3, the main information is shot. I think it can be think cinematographic qualities. It is not only the content of shot, but also how to shot. To explain it, there are three factors: (1) the qualities of video, (2) the structure of menu (3) time and length. ( those factors have a direct bearing on camera lens.)

Camera lens: focus

The MS (Mid Shot) Shows some part of the subject in more detail whilst still giving an impression of the whole subject. It answers the ‘what’ question by showing your subject performing an action. Focus is 35-55mm. (for example, first picture)

The WS (Wide Shot = Long Shot) The subject is our answer to the ‘where’ question, at the
beginning of a scene it is also known as the Establishing Shot. It takes up the full frame, or at least as much as possible. (for example, the second picture)

180° rule

It makes sure the common space between camera lens.
It makes sure the special direction-sense of screen.
180° rule makes a clear project for space.

computer and internet

In week two, the lecture introduced the development of computer and internet. In the history of computer, Charles Babbage was invented the first computer: Turing. Computers were first commercially produced by IBM in the 1950s.Xerox PARC, is a research and development company in Palo Alto, California with a distinguished reputation for its contributions to information technology.Apple is an American multinational corporation that designs and manufactures consumer electronics and computer software products. Apple created the latest and greatest home-made PCs. IBM is also great in computer developing history.

In this lecture, Internet, Web and Cyberspace are explained particular. The mean of Internet, Web and Cyberspace are different. The Internet is the sum of interconnected computer hardware and the software that runs it, the
Web is a particular application of the Internet that is particularly easy to use and Cyberspace is
the sum of users' imaginations as they use the Internet.

YouTube

YouTube is a video sharing website, people can upload and share videos. Internationalization is unprecedented, include nine different language. YouYube is excellence, because it leads a internet revolution. It means that the people do not only accept information, they become someone who provide information. Every people can creat own News and upload family and living videos. But in the same time, there also have some problems, for example, society problem and copyright problem. It can not be ignored that some videos publicize badness custom.

technology and communication

Week one, the lecture explained some words, for example, What is communication, What is Technology. From Wikipedia, Communication is a process of transferring information from one entity to another. Communication processes are sign-mediated interactions between at least two agents which share a repertoire of signs and semiotic rules. Communication is commonly defined as "the imparting or interchange of thoughts, opinions, or information by speech, writing, or signs". Technology is a broad concept that deals with human as well as other animal species' usage and knowledge of tools andcrafts, and how it affects a species' ability to control and adapt to its environment. In our lecture, Marshall Mcluhan argues that technologies are extensions of human body ... a tool is an extension of the hand; a wheel is an extension of the leg; and a book is an extension of the eye.

As we know, lots of inventions make a revolution in filmdom, though most of the inventions are not worked for filmdom in the beginning. Following the technology, from silent films to sound film, from black-and-white photography to color film and Cinema Scope, the filmdom developed enormous.

New Communication Technologies are also introduced in our lecture. I think the list of the New Communication Technologies is better to explain.
